Traditional videoconferencing telepresence systems use internal multipoint control units to join up to nine different call points.  Each call point can be equipped with several audio inputs, such as up to eight echo-canceling microphone channels within a single device.  PC-based architectures have minimal video interfaces and limited audio interface capabilities, hindering audio quality since microphone placement is an important factor for audio clarity.  This sidebar article in SCN contrasts the two architectures, their performance capabilities, and highlights opportunities afforded by the performance gap.
