Passing High-Quality Audio Over Ethernet With The Dante Network

Outfitting an auditorium, conference room, or other meeting space with audio solutions has typically involved connecting speakers, microphones, and amplifiers with an assortment of cables. Not only are these cables unsightly and a potential tripping hazard, but they can also seriously limit how those audio systems are deployed. Some spaces may not be conducive to running cables inside walls or above ceilings, and changes to the system layout may be difficult to carry out.

Additionally, depending on the size of the room or when distributing audio to multiple spaces, long cable runs may be required. Because audio signals degrade over long distances, the result may be sound quality that’s too poor to be effective.

What is the Dante Network Interface?

Dante, developed in 2006 by Australian company Audinate, stands for Digital Audio Network Through Ethernet. Instead of traditional audio cables, a Dante network transports digital signals via Cat 5e or fiber optic cables. Because data is digital, there’s no deterioration in the quality of audio on a Dante network no matter how far the signal travels.

Dante audio can be incorporated into audio equipment via hardware modules, chips, and software, in products ranging from individual microphones to broadcast consoles incorporating hundreds of channels. A Dante AV module offers the same functionality for video signals.

Many existing audio products can be outfitted with a Dante network interface hardware card or a Dante adapter that makes it easy to connect an audio device to a Dante network, and much newer audio equipment is Dante-enabled. 

Advantages of Dante in a Converged Network

Many businesses use what is called a converged network where a variety of media signals can be shared and passed across the same network. That includes video signals, voice data, and audio. Because Dante-enabled devices can receive and pass high quality audio over ethernet, they can co-exist on an existing converged data network alongside VoIP, email, and other types of network traffic.

Dante devices on the same network automatically detect each other, making it a breeze to set up a new system or make changes to an existing one. There is no need to configure devices; just plug them in and you’re ready to go. Dante uses one-click routing, allowing users to route audio signals wherever they choose.
