A small sampling of audio and video products for the office, conference room, or huddle room.

Office communications have evolved beyond the conference phone. While it seems that there will always be a space for the trusty IP phone, more and more communication options are geared towards multi person audio and video setups. In a market that is defined by flexibility and excellent audio quality, a product must stand out in some way to ensure that it is adopted and used to its fullest extent, while at the same time justifying the cost.

Fortunately for organizations looking to integrate UC products into their workspace, there has been an explosion in products over the past few years. An admin or IT manager won’t have any issue finding several products that suit their needs. Unfortunately, this means that with such a large variety of products to choose from, it can be difficult to settle on one option. No one likes buyer’s remorse, especially when potentially spending a large sum of money on a communications infrastructure.

In an effort to help with this conundrum, I’ve analyzed four product categories and outlined their different characteristics.

Overall categories include:

  • Wired Microphones
  • Wireless Microphone Arrays
  • Conference Telephones
  • Video Conference Devices

The following was examined for each product type:

  • Platform (Voice/Video)
  • Tech (Wifi, Bluetooth®, USB, etc)
  • Best Use Case (Who this product is geared towards)
  • Software Supported
  • Considerations

A few things to note:

  • Every product and brand examined below has definite pros and cons beyond the price, and none would necessarily leave a purchaser with the aforementioned buyer’s remorse.
  • The wired microphones and wireless microphone arrays would be part of a larger AV setup, whereas the conference phones and video conference devices can be used in more standalone setups.
  • This is not by any means an exhaustive list of UC products, that effort would be encyclopedic, unwieldy, and not necessarily useful.

With that in mind, here’s the list. We hope you find it helpful in your search for the perfect UC setup.
